Researchers have developed a new 4D biofabrication technique that could change how scientists approach tissue engineering and wound healing. The method relies on kirigami strategies, a variation of origami that involves cutting as well as folding, to generate complex three dimensional shapes that resemble natural tissue structures in the human body.
Unlike traditional 3D printing, which builds static objects layer by layer, 4D biofabrication adds the element of time. Printed materials are designed to change shape or function when exposed to specific triggers such as moisture, temperature, or chemical signals. This allows flat sheets of biocompatible material to fold, bend, and curl into curved forms like blood vessels, muscle fibers, or skin layers.
The kirigami approach gives researchers greater control over how these transformations unfold. By planning precise cuts into the material, they can guide it into intricate geometries that would be difficult or impossible to produce directly. These shapes better match the curved and layered architecture of real human tissues, which is important for proper cell growth and integration.
Potential applications include patches that conform to wounds, scaffolds for regenerating damaged organs, and flexible implants that adapt to the body over time. While the technology is still in early stages, the work points toward more adaptable and personalized medical treatments in the future.
