The next-generation Tesla Roadster is shaping up to be far more than a simple electric supercar. According to details surrounding the project, the vehicle will combine several unconventional technologies that could place it in a class of its own.
At the center of the design are cold-gas thrusters developed with SpaceX. These small rocket-based units are intended to improve acceleration, braking, and cornering by pushing the car in directions its tires alone cannot manage. Feeding those thrusters are composite air tanks rated to roughly 10,000 psi, a pressure level rarely seen in passenger vehicles.
The Roadster is also expected to use ground-effect suction fans, which pull the car toward the road to increase grip without adding large wings. Active aerodynamics will adjust body panels in real time to reduce drag or boost downforce as conditions change. Finally, a steer-by-wire chassis removes the mechanical link between the steering wheel and the front wheels, allowing faster and more programmable responses.
Together, these systems suggest a car built around extremes rather than convention. The combination of rocket thrusters, high-pressure tanks, suction-based downforce, moving aero, and electronic steering is unusual even by supercar standards. Whether the final production version delivers on every promise remains to be seen, but the technical direction alone sets the Roadster apart from anything else on the road.
