Apple introduced a major update to its Siri digital assistant on Monday, infusing the voice helper with advanced artificial intelligence capabilities. The announcement came during the company's annual Worldwide Developers Conference, which marks the final such event under CEO Tim Cook's leadership.
The new Siri is designed to understand context better and handle more complex requests without needing to repeat information. For example, users can ask about a message they just received and then follow up with a question about the sender's location, and Siri will connect the dots. The assistant can also take actions inside third-party apps, such as editing a photo or sending a file, based on voice commands alone.
Apple is positioning this as a privacy-focused approach to AI, processing most requests directly on the device rather than sending data to cloud servers. The company emphasized that personal information stays on the phone, a key differentiator from competitors like Google and Microsoft who rely heavily on cloud computing for their AI features.
Developers will get access to new tools that let them integrate Siri's enhanced capabilities into their own apps. The update is expected to roll out to users later this year with the next version of iOS. For Cook, this event serves as a capstone to a decade of product launches, as he prepares to hand over the CEO role to a successor. The new Siri represents Apple's latest effort to catch up in the AI race while maintaining its reputation for user privacy.
