Arkansas has started deploying Rapid DNA technology at several detention centers across the state, a move aimed at cutting the time it takes to connect suspects to crime scenes. The Arkansas Department of Public Safety announced the rollout after receiving FBI authorization to use the system at participating jails.

Under the program, DNA samples collected from qualifying arrestees are processed on site and compared against profiles already in state and national databases. What once took weeks or months in a laboratory can now be completed in roughly 90 minutes, giving investigators faster leads while a case is still fresh.

Officials say the technology could help clear unsolved crimes sooner and prevent people who might be wrongly suspected from staying under scrutiny. The system also allows authorities to check whether an arrestee's DNA matches evidence from other open cases, potentially linking crimes that were not previously connected.
