ASE Technology Holding is seeing a surge in demand for its advanced packaging services, particularly its LEAP platform, which is helping the company carve out a stronger position against rivals like Amkor Technology and Intel. The company's latest earnings report shows that revenue from high-performance computing and AI-related chips is climbing, and management says the LEAP technology, which stands for Low-loss Enhanced Advanced Packaging, is a key reason why.
The growth is not just about volume. ASE is also reporting better margins on these advanced products, as customers are willing to pay a premium for the precision and performance that LEAP offers. This is a direct challenge to competitors who have been pushing their own advanced packaging solutions, such as Intel's Foveros and Amkor's in-house offerings. While AMKR and INTC have strong portfolios, ASE's ability to scale LEAP production quickly is giving it an edge in the current AI infrastructure buildout.
To keep up with demand, ASE is expanding its manufacturing capacity in both Taiwan and Japan. The company is adding new lines specifically for LEAP, and it expects these to come online in the next few quarters. The timing matters because AI accelerators and networking chips need more complex packaging to connect memory and logic efficiently. ASE says its order book for LEAP is full through the first half of next year, which gives it visibility that many of its peers lack.
Still, there are risks. The semiconductor cycle can turn quickly, and any slowdown in AI spending would hit advanced packaging first. ASE also faces rising costs for equipment and materials, which could squeeze margins if pricing pressure intensifies. But for now, the company is betting that LEAP will be its ticket to outgrow the broader market, and the early numbers suggest that bet is paying off. Investors are watching closely to see if ASE can keep this momentum going against well-funded competitors.
