Column: A nod to technology

I stumbled across something unexpectedly moving the other day. It is an app that breathes life into old photographs. Not in a flashy, sci-fi way, but with a gentle, almost respectful nudge. You take a faded black-and-white portrait of a grandparent or a stiff studio shot from the 1940s, and the software subtly animates the face. The eyes blink. The mouth curves into a faint smile. The head turns, just a fraction of an inch.

It is a strange experience. For a moment, the past is not a flat, silent image. It is a person, caught in a loop of gentle motion. The technology feels less like a gimmick and more like a quiet nod to the people who came before us. We spend so much time looking forward, chasing the next upgrade, the next faster processor. This app does the opposite. It uses modern tools to look backward, to remind us that the stiff figures in those old frames were once as alive and fidgety as we are.

There is a humility to it. It acknowledges that our ancestors were not just historical markers. They were people who blinked, who laughed, who moved through their days. The animation is not perfect. It can be a little eerie, a little too smooth. But that imperfection is part of its charm. It is a reminder that technology, at its best, is not about replacing humanity. It is about connecting us to it.
