Cooling overheated summer railways with 'thermal-blocking textile' technology

As climate change pushes summer temperatures to new extremes, rail operators are facing a serious problem: tracks are getting too hot. Surface temperatures on steel rails now regularly exceed 60 degrees Celsius, or 140 degrees Fahrenheit, during heat waves. That level of heat can cause the metal to expand and buckle, a dangerous condition known as sun kink. To prevent derailments, train companies are forced to slow trains down or halt service entirely, leading to widespread delays and stranded passengers.

Now engineers are testing a simple but clever solution: a special textile designed to block thermal radiation. The fabric, which can be draped over or wrapped around the rails, acts as a shield against direct sunlight. It reflects a large portion of the solar energy before it ever reaches the steel, keeping the track temperature significantly lower. Early trials show the material can reduce rail surface heat by up to 10 to 15 degrees, which is enough to avoid the most critical threshold for deformation.

The technology is still in its pilot phase, but it offers a low-cost, quick-to-deploy option compared to rebuilding tracks with more heat-resistant alloys or installing elaborate cooling systems. Workers can lay the textile along vulnerable curves and junctions in a matter of hours. While it will not solve the root cause of rising global temperatures, it buys time for infrastructure that was designed for a cooler world. Rail operators hope to roll out the fabric on a wider scale next summer, especially on busy commuter lines where delays hit the most people. For now, passengers can only hope that the next heat wave comes with a little less disruption.
