CT officials urge broad engagement with quantum technologies as state vies for federal funding

Connecticut is making a strong push to position itself as a national leader in quantum technology, with state officials calling for broad public and private sector involvement to secure a share of federal funding. Last year, the state announced a $121 million investment in quantum technology, which includes backing for the collaborative research initiative known as QuantumCT. This funding is seen as a critical first step in building the infrastructure needed to compete for larger federal grants, particularly those tied to the CHIPS and Science Act.

Governor Ned Lamont and other state leaders have emphasized that quantum computing and related technologies are not just for scientists and engineers. They argue that the economic future of the state depends on a wide range of industries, from healthcare to manufacturing, understanding and adopting these tools. The goal is to create a quantum ecosystem that includes startups, established companies, universities, and community colleges.

Officials are urging businesses and educational institutions to engage now, rather than waiting for the technology to mature. They warn that states moving quickly to build a skilled workforce and research partnerships will have a significant advantage. Connecticut hopes that its early investment and collaborative model will make it a standout candidate for the next wave of federal funding, which could bring hundreds of millions of dollars to the region. The message from Hartford is clear: quantum technology is coming, and Connecticut intends to be at the center of it.
