The Eastman School of Music has announced a new undergraduate major focused on music creation and technology, signaling a shift toward integrating traditional musical training with modern digital tools. The program is designed to prepare students for careers where composition, performance, and technical innovation increasingly overlap.
This new major builds on the University of Rochester's expanding role at the crossroads of music, engineering, sound design, and digital media. Students will have access to state-of-the-art recording studios, software development labs, and collaborative spaces that bridge the gap between the conservatory and the engineering school. Coursework will cover areas such as electronic music production, interactive sound design, audio programming, and immersive media.
Faculty members emphasize that the curriculum is not simply about using technology but about creating it. Students will be expected to develop original software, design new instruments, and explore how artificial intelligence and machine learning can shape musical expression. The program also encourages partnerships with Rochester's computer science and electrical engineering departments.
Eastman officials say the major responds to a growing demand from students who want to work in fields like game audio, virtual reality soundscapes, and live electronic performance. The first cohort is expected to enroll in the fall semester, with plans to expand the program in subsequent years.
