GomSpace has confirmed that its GOMX-5 technology demonstration mission will fly on SpaceX's Transporter-18 rideshare launch. The 8U CubeSat is set to lift off on October 1, 2026, carrying a payload designed to test advanced satellite communications systems in low Earth orbit.
The mission is backed by the European Space Agency, which has supported the project as part of its efforts to push small satellite capabilities further. GOMX-5 is built to validate new radio technology and antenna concepts that could improve data throughput and link reliability for future smallsat constellations.
Engineers at GomSpace say the spacecraft will demonstrate high speed communications in the X and Ka bands, a step up from the simpler systems flown on earlier GOMX missions. The satellite also carries an experimental software defined radio payload, allowing ground teams to reconfigure signal processing after launch.
Transporter-18 is a dedicated rideshare flight, meaning GOMX-5 will share the rocket with dozens of other small payloads. That approach keeps launch costs low for smaller operators and gives technology demonstrators like this one a practical path to orbit.
If the demonstration succeeds, the communications hardware tested on GOMX-5 could feed into commercial products for Earth observation, internet of things connectivity, and inter satellite links. GomSpace expects to begin analyzing telemetry shortly after deployment and will run the experiment over several months.
