SSM Health facilities in Mount Vernon and Centralia have introduced a new brain monitoring system designed to catch seizures that are difficult to spot. The technology, known as Ceribell EEG, gives clinical teams a faster way to identify non-convulsive seizures, which do not produce the visible shaking or convulsions most people associate with seizure activity.
Non-convulsive seizures can be especially dangerous because they often go unnoticed. Patients may appear confused, unresponsive, or simply "not themselves," and without brain wave monitoring, these episodes can be mistaken for other conditions. Delays in detection can lead to lasting neurological damage.
The Ceribell system works by placing a headband with electrodes on the patient and providing rapid brain wave readings that clinicians can interpret within minutes. Traditional EEG setups can take much longer to arrange and read, which matters when every minute counts.
Staff at both hospitals say the tool allows them to respond sooner and make better treatment decisions for patients who may be experiencing silent seizure activity. The rollout reflects a broader push to bring advanced neurological monitoring into community hospitals, not just large academic medical centers.
