Jensen Huang Told Sega Nvidia’s Technology Had Failed. Here's Why This Executive Gave Him $5 Million Anyway

In the early days of Nvidia, the company was struggling to find its footing. One of its early partners was Sega, which had commissioned Nvidia to build a graphics chip for the Dreamcast console. But the project was a disaster. The technology simply did not work as promised. Instead of hiding the problem, Nvidia's co-founder and CEO Jensen Huang flew to Japan and told Sega's leadership directly that Nvidia had failed. He admitted the chip could not be delivered and suggested Sega find another partner.

Former Sega president Shoichiro Irimajiri recently shared the story with Inc. magazine. He said that Huang's honesty was shocking. Most executives in that situation would try to bluff or negotiate a delay. But Huang was blunt about the failure. That candor impressed Irimajiri. He saw something more valuable than a working prototype: a leader who took responsibility and understood the technology deeply.

Despite the failed project, Irimajiri decided to invest $5 million in Nvidia anyway. He believed in Huang's engineering ability and his long-term vision. The money gave Nvidia a critical lifeline. The company used it to develop the Riva 128 graphics card, which saved the business and set the stage for the GPU revolution that followed. Irimajiri later said that Huang's combination of technical skill and raw ambition convinced him the startup deserved another chance. That bet turned out to be one of the smartest in tech history.
