Parents push for less YouTube, more books in schools

Parent organizations in several states are stepping up their campaigns to limit the use of YouTube and other video platforms in classrooms, urging administrators to bring back printed books and traditional reading time. The movement is gaining traction as more families report that their children spend upwards of three hours a day staring at screens during school hours, often for assignments that could be completed with a pencil and paper.

The concern is not just about distraction. Many parents point to recent studies linking heavy screen exposure to shorter attention spans and weaker reading comprehension. They argue that while educational videos can be useful, they have become a default teaching tool rather than a supplement. One mother from Ohio described her fourth grader coming home with red, tired eyes after watching science clips for most of the afternoon. She said her son used to love flipping through picture books, but now he just expects everything to be animated.

School boards are listening. A handful of districts have already piloted "screen-free Fridays" and reported that students are more engaged in group discussions and show better retention of material. However, teachers caution that removing technology entirely is not realistic, especially for older students who need digital skills for future careers. The push is not about banning devices altogether, but about finding a balance. Parents agree, but they want proof that time spent on YouTube is actually improving learning outcomes, not just filling class minutes.

As the debate continues, some schools are starting to create dedicated quiet reading corners with donated books and are asking teachers to plan at least one offline lesson per day. The hope is that by the end of the school year, students will reach for a novel as often as they reach for a tablet.
