Seagate Technology shares dropped 9 percent on Tuesday, part of a broader selloff across the data storage sector. The decline came as investors weighed two separate pressures on the hard drive maker: growing concern about supply chain constraints and reports that the company is in talks to acquire TDK's head-unit business.

The supply fears center on the components that go into hard disk drives. Any disruption to those inputs tends to hit Seagate and its rivals hard, since the market for HDDs is already tight and demand from cloud providers remains strong. Traders used the uncertainty as a reason to take profits after a long run higher.

The potential deal with TDK adds another layer of questions.
