Self-flying air taxis and drones: Boeing sells key aviation technology businesses to Archer

Boeing has agreed to sell three of its key aviation technology businesses to Archer Aviation, a move that consolidates much of the autonomous flight sector under one roof. The deal covers Wisk, SkyGrid, and Insitu, bringing together self-flying air taxis, drone operations, and advanced airspace management software.

Wisk is known for its work on autonomous passenger aircraft, while SkyGrid focuses on AI-powered flight coordination and airspace safety. Insitu builds and operates unmanned aerial systems, including long-endurance surveillance drones. By combining these assets, Archer will gain a broad toolkit for developing and managing fleets of pilotless aircraft in urban and remote environments alike.

The sale marks a significant shift for Boeing, which has been streamlining its portfolio after years of financial strain. The company has faced pressure to focus on its core commercial and defense manufacturing rather than speculative future mobility projects. For Archer, the acquisition is a major leap forward in its race to launch commercial air taxi services. The company already has partnerships with major airlines and has been testing its electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft.

Industry analysts see the deal as a signal that autonomous aviation is moving from concept to consolidation. With Wisk's certification progress, SkyGrid's software, and Insitu's operational experience, Archer is positioning itself as a one-stop provider for the next generation of flight. Financial terms were not disclosed, but the transaction is expected to close later this year, pending regulatory approval.
