The new system will allow shoppers to use contactless credit cards, debit cards, and mobile wallets like Apple Pay and Google Pay at checkout. This marks a significant shift for Walmart, which had previously pushed its own Walmart Pay app as the primary mobile payment option. While Walmart Pay will remain available, the addition of universal tap-to-pay removes a long-standing friction point for customers who prefer not to use a store-specific app.
The rollout will cover both Walmart and Sam's Club locations, though the company has not provided a specific timeline for when every register will be equipped. Store associates are being trained on the new terminals, and the hardware upgrade is already underway in many locations. For shoppers, the change means faster transactions and fewer moments of fumbling for a physical card or unlocking a phone.
Industry analysts note that Walmart's adoption of tap-to-pay was overdue. Most national chains, including Target, Costco, and Kroger, have accepted contactless payments for years. Walmart's hesitation was often attributed to a desire to steer customers toward its own payment ecosystem, which offers rewards and data collection benefits. But consumer demand for a simpler, more universal checkout experience appears to have won out.
The upgrade also positions Walmart for the continued growth of digital wallets and the eventual decline of physical credit cards. While the company has not announced any changes to its rewards program, customers can expect a smoother checkout process starting in the coming months.
