What History Says About the AI Revolution and Work

Every era of rapid technological change arrives with the same promise: machines will free us from drudgery. The question is whether that promise holds up when we look at what actually happened the last time labor saving inventions reshaped the economy.

The industrial revolution did not simply hand workers more leisure. It moved them from fields into factories, changed the rhythm of the working day, and created entirely new categories of jobs that no one could have predicted. The same pattern repeated with electrification, with the assembly line, and with the computer. Each wave destroyed some forms of work while generating others, and the transition was rarely smooth for the people caught in the middle.
