REDLANDS, CA - The West Virginia Department of Transportation has received a major industry award for its work with geographic information systems, or GIS technology. The recognition came from Esri, a leading company in the field of digital mapping and spatial analysis, during a recent conference.
The award highlights how WVDOT has used GIS to improve road maintenance, project planning, and public safety across the state. By integrating real-time data with detailed maps, the department can track road conditions, manage construction zones, and respond more quickly to emergencies like landslides or winter storms. Officials say the technology has also helped streamline communication between different teams, from engineers to field crews.
One key project involved creating a central digital system that gives workers instant access to information about bridges, pavement, and traffic patterns. This has reduced paperwork and cut down on the time needed to make decisions. The department noted that the system allows for better long-term planning, as it can predict where repairs will be needed most.
The award places West Virginia among a small group of state transportation agencies recognized for advanced GIS use. WVDOT leaders said the honor reflects years of effort to modernize operations and make taxpayer dollars go further. They plan to expand the technology to cover more rural areas in the coming years.
