Teaching English for Medical Purposes is essential for medical students, particularly in non-English-speaking regions, as it enables effective communication and access to international medical resources. However, the education system for medical English faces significant hurdles. A recent qualitative study conducted in Iran sheds light on these challenges and suggests innovative strategies to improve the learning experience.
The research involved semi-structured interviews with 13 medical English instructors and 10 medical students from various universities in Iran, conducted between September 2023 and February 2024. The thematic analysis revealed six primary challenges: instructor-related issues, student-related difficulties, curriculum shortcomings, organizational barriers, limitations in technology-enhanced learning, and recommendations for improvement.
Key findings highlighted the need for better instructor training, updated curricula, and the integration of technology and gamification into the learning process. By overcoming these obstacles, medical English education can be significantly enhanced, empowering future healthcare professionals to excel in a globalized medical landscape.
