The Korea Water Resources Corporation, known as K-water, signed a memorandum of understanding on Thursday with the city of Austin, Texas, to cooperate on artificial intelligence technology for water management. The agreement aims to establish a framework for sharing advanced AI-driven systems that can improve how water utilities monitor infrastructure, detect leaks, and respond to operational problems in real time.
Under the deal, the two sides will exchange technical knowledge and conduct joint research on smart water grid solutions. K-water plans to introduce its AI-based water treatment and pipeline management platforms, while Austin will provide operational data and field testing opportunities through its municipal water utility. Officials said the partnership is expected to help both organizations reduce water loss and lower maintenance costs.
The collaboration also covers training programs for engineers and joint participation in international water technology conferences. K-water has been expanding its overseas partnerships in recent years, positioning its AI water management models as exportable solutions for cities facing aging infrastructure and water scarcity. Austin officials described the agreement as a step toward modernizing their water network and improving service reliability for residents.
The memorandum is not legally binding, but both parties said they intend to develop specific project plans within the coming months. Follow-up working groups will focus on data security standards and performance benchmarks before any technology is deployed.
