NAU Launches New Engineering Technology Degree

Northern Arizona University has unveiled a new degree program in Engineering Technology, designed to bridge the gap between classroom learning and one of Arizona's fastest-growing industries. The program, which will be offered through the College of Engineering, Informatics, and Applied Sciences, aims to equip students with hands-on skills in areas like automation, manufacturing systems, and applied design.

Unlike traditional engineering degrees that focus heavily on theoretical math and science, this new curriculum emphasizes practical application. Students will work directly with modern equipment and software used in real-world settings, preparing them for roles such as engineering technologist, project manager, or quality control specialist. University officials say the degree was developed in direct response to feedback from local employers who need graduates ready to solve technical problems from day one.

Arizona's manufacturing and technology sectors have seen steady growth over the past decade, and the new program is intended to help fill a talent gap. The university expects the degree to attract both recent high school graduates and working professionals looking to upskill. Courses will cover topics like computer-aided design, industrial robotics, and sustainable energy systems.

The first cohort of students is expected to begin classes in the fall semester. NAU plans to offer the program at its Flagstaff campus and through its statewide locations, making it accessible to students across Arizona.
