Peru is leaning on one of South America's most powerful computers to get ahead of El Niño, a climate pattern that has repeatedly battered the country with floods and landslides. The machine, known as NUNA, packs 6,336 CPU cores and 4,800 terabytes of storage, and it is now tracking the phenomenon in real time as forecasters warn the event could reach historic strength.

El Niño warms the waters of the eastern Pacific and disrupts weather worldwide, but Peru sits directly in its path. Past events have swollen rivers, triggered deadly mudslides and wiped out roads and homes along the coast.
