FUKUI, JAPAN-A small, bent piece of iron discovered at an archaeological site in Japan could represent one of the earliest known examples of saw technology in the country. The artifact, unearthed in the city of Fukui, has drawn attention from researchers who believe its shape and wear patterns suggest it was used for cutting, rather than as a simple blade or scraper.
The object measures just a few centimeters in length and features a distinct curve at one end. According to local reports, the tool was found alongside other iron fragments and pottery shards dating back to the Yayoi period, roughly between 300 BCE and 300 CE. This era is known for the introduction of wet-rice agriculture and metalworking to Japan.
Experts at the Fukui Prefectural Museum of Cultural History have examined the piece under magnification. They noted microscopic striations along the inner edge of the curve, consistent with repeated sawing motions against wood or bone. If confirmed, this would push back the timeline for saw use in Japan by several centuries. Previously, the oldest known saws in the region were linked to later Kofun period tombs.
The discovery is still under study. Researchers plan to conduct further analysis, including X-ray imaging and comparisons with known metal tools from China and Korea, to rule out accidental damage or alternative uses. The findings could reshape understanding of how early Japanese communities processed materials for construction, toolmaking, and daily life.
