Ocean Beach Women Lead Fight Against Unfettered Technology in Schools

By Jillian Butler

As digital devices and software become standard tools in modern classrooms, a growing number of parents are pushing back against what they see as an unchecked invasion of technology into childhood. In Ocean Beach, a group of women has emerged as a local front in a national movement to reclaim school environments from screens.

These mothers, many of whom work in education and tech themselves, argue that the rapid adoption of tablets, laptops, and AI-driven learning platforms has outpaced proper research into their effects on young minds. They point to rising rates of anxiety, shortened attention spans, and a loss of basic handwriting and social skills among students who spend hours each day staring at screens.

The coalition has organized community meetings, presented data to the school board, and circulated petitions calling for stricter limits on device use during instructional time. Their demands include a return to paper textbooks, more recess and hands-on activities, and mandatory parent notification before new software is introduced.

Opponents, including some administrators and tech vendors, argue that digital literacy is essential for future careers and that banning devices would leave students unprepared. But the Ocean Beach women counter that unfettered access is not the same as thoughtful integration. They want balance, not a total ban, and they want parents to have a real voice in decisions that affect their children's development.

The group has drawn support from national organizations like the Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood, but they emphasize that their fight is local. They are not anti-technology, they say. They are pro-child. And in a world where screens are everywhere, they believe the classroom should be one of the last places where a child can simply look a teacher in the eye and learn.
