A major funding opportunity has just opened for researchers working on digital technology projects across Africa. The Science Granting Councils Initiative, which brings together 20 national science funding bodies from across the continent, has launched a call for Expressions of Interest for a substantial $12 million research fund.
The money is earmarked for projects that explore how digital tools, artificial intelligence, and data systems can solve real-world problems in areas like agriculture, health, and education. The initiative is looking for collaborative proposals that involve teams from at least two different African countries. The goal is to encourage cross-border knowledge sharing and build a stronger continental research network.
Applicants are expected to submit a short outline of their proposed work before the full application stage. The focus is on practical, scalable solutions that can be implemented locally rather than purely theoretical studies. Special attention will be given to projects that include early-career researchers and that address gender gaps in digital access.
Interested teams have until the end of next month to submit their initial proposals. The selection process will prioritize projects with clear plans for community engagement and policy impact. This call represents one of the largest single investments in digital research coordination on the continent in recent years.
