Springfield High School of Science and Technology officially opened its new $3 million amphitheater on Thursday morning, marking a major addition to the campus. The outdoor venue, built with a mix of school funds and community donations, features tiered stone seating for 500 people, a covered stage with professional lighting and sound systems, and accessible pathways.
School officials said the amphitheater will serve multiple purposes. It will host graduation ceremonies, drama productions, concerts, and guest lectures. Science classes also plan to use the space for outdoor labs and astronomy nights. "This is not just a pretty place to sit," said Principal Linda Torres during the ribbon-cutting. "It is a working classroom and a community gathering spot."
Construction took 14 months and faced delays due to material shortages. The original budget was $2.8 million, but rising costs pushed the final price to $3 million. The shortfall was covered by a last-minute donation from the Springfield Education Foundation.
Students gave the project high marks. Senior class president Marcus Chen said the amphitheater gives the school a "real college feel." He added that the first event will be the spring jazz concert next month. The school plans to keep the amphitheater open to the public on weekends for small events and study groups.
