Technology sector slumps in July as AI and memory stocks lead selloff

The technology sector suffered its worst month of the year in July, with the Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLK) dropping 8 percent as investors fled from artificial intelligence and memory chip names that had powered the market's earlier gains. The pullback marked a sharp reversal from a strong first half, when enthusiasm over AI infrastructure spending and soaring demand for high-bandwidth memory drove valuations to record highs.

Leading the decline were semiconductor makers and AI hardware suppliers, many of which gave back double-digit percentage gains from the spring. Memory chip producers were hit especially hard, as concerns over inventory buildup and softening consumer electronics demand overshadowed continued data center orders. Several major AI-focused companies also reported quarterly results that, while solid, failed to meet the sky-high expectations baked into their share prices, prompting a broad de-rating across the group.

Analysts pointed to a mix of profit-taking, rising Treasury yields, and worries about the durability of AI capital expenditure cycles as key triggers for the selloff. The rotation out of tech was also driven by a shift toward small caps and value sectors, which had lagged for most of the year. Despite the slump, many strategists remain cautiously optimistic, noting that fundamentals for cloud computing and AI training remain intact, though they caution that volatility could persist through the late summer earnings season. The XLK's decline has pulled the broader S&P 500 down roughly 3 percent from its July peak, underscoring how heavily the index's performance now depends on tech megacaps.
