Two reporters from a business news outlet decided to try a four-day digital detox by swapping their smartphones for basic flip phones. The goal was simple: disconnect from constant notifications, social media, and the endless scroll. The reality, however, was far more complicated.
The reporters quickly discovered that modern life is built around smartphone functionality. Simple tasks like checking email, navigating with maps, or even paying for parking required a workaround. Without a camera, they had to ask strangers to take photos for notes. Without ride-sharing apps, they had to plan public transit routes in advance. One reporter admitted feeling a phantom buzz in her pocket for the first two days, a clear sign of how deeply the device is wired into daily habit.
Despite the frustration, there were genuine benefits. Both reporters reported sleeping better, feeling less anxious, and having longer, more focused conversations with friends. Without the urge to check Instagram during a lull, they found themselves simply looking around and noticing details they usually missed.
By the end of the experiment, both said they would do it again, but only for short stretches. The flip phone forced them to be more intentional with their time, but it also made them realize how much of modern convenience they take for granted. They concluded that the goal is not to abandon the smartphone entirely, but to use it with more discipline. The experiment proved that while you can go back to a simpler device, you cannot easily go back to a simpler life without making significant compromises.
